Maglev development for the Linear Chuo Shinkansen is in its final phase. The base technology for commercial operations is established, and current work targets lower operating and maintenance costs through maintenance labor reduction and more efficient upkeep. A major project-side milestone occurred in January 2026 with an agreement in Shizuoka on compensation handling for water impacts. The planned 2027 opening has been postponed, while preparations for eventual service continue.
Three decades of running tests support system maturity at the vehicle level. Reliability is treated as an engineering and operations issue focused on long-term maintainability. The core enabling hardware is the power conversion equipment installed at substations, which drives the system’s propulsion and power control. Onboard, the essential technology is superconductivity, centered on superconducting magnets.
