Prof. Dr. habil. Dr. h.c. Johannes Kluehspies is the president of the International Maglev Board (e.V.).


Johannes Kluehspies holds a Master's Degree in Urban and Transport Geography from Technical University of Munich, a PhD in Transport Geography from University of Bochum, and a post-doctorate degree (Dr. habilitatus) from the University of Leipzig, Germany. He was awarded a doctor honoris causa by the  Emperor Alexander I. St. Petersburg State Transport University, Russian Federation.

In 2007 he received his post-doctorate degree (Dr. habilitatus) from the University of Leipzig for his scientific thesis on the future of transport.

At a young age he worked as a train conductor on international long-distance trains and night trains in Europe in order to understand the operation of rail traffic systems in detail and practically. Later, he received a state stipend from German Academic Exchange Service to spend several years in Japan, studying transport (public transport, Shinkansen) and urban development projects, including shopping centres at railway stations, urban renewal, among others.

Today, he consults on transport and on regional and urban planning policies, and has published several studies on maglev systems with a focus on technology assessment and urban and regional planning issues.

He currently serves as full professor at the TH Deggendorf (Technical University of Applied Sciences), Germany. He also lectures at University of Leipzig, Germany, at Wien University oaS, Austria, and is a member of the Centre of Excellence for High Performance Railways and Maglev Systems at Technical University of Dresden, Germany.
