Anything under 1,000 kilometres is not worth double handling containers but if it was in a straight tunnel over 1,000 km it could earn enough to subsidise daytime fares.

They should stop the excavation and use the SC maglev as a tourist attraction and develop an overnight container train to connect Sydney to Melbourne via Canberra and Albury that will earn twice as much as just a daytime fare. At present China keeps saying it has got the fastest train in the world w...

After watching Jeff Dimery on the National press club of Australia today I think we will have small 300 mw nuclear reactors replacing coal fired generators keeping the towns alive and using surplus power through HVDC cables in the tunnel making it even more profitable.

As it is only single guideway between passing stations with a breathable 11 psi it allows the container train to go as fast as the LO maglev in a smaller atmospheric tunnel. As it would only take two years to drive from Sydney to Melbourne with 60 Chinese double shield hardrock TBM it may be better to forget about the greenies in Japan and think about making an overnight container train for Australia to double the income.

If you want to replace planes and trucks over 1,000 kilometers you only have a couple passing stations and use the proven 600 km/h Japanese SC maglev.
If you want to use the slower Chinese maglev with many stations then that would be the cheapest.
It all depends on what you need.

In my opinion medium speed maglev will not be economically viable because it is too slow to beat trucks with an overnight container train over 1,000 km to reduce the daytime fare but that is just my opinion.

Why try to reinvent the wheel when Japan has already proven a 600 km/h SC maglev and if is used in overnight container trains Sydney/Melbourne in an 11 psi single tunnel it will go 700 km/h and reduce the daytime fare below planes while earning $2,000,000 per night @$2,000 per container.
