Hebei Province in northern China is preparing to undertake significant forward-looking research on maglev trains and other advanced transportation technologies between Beijing and Xiong'an over the next five years. This initiative is part of the provincial goals outlined in the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), which focuses on boosting the economic and social development of Hebei. A key component of this vision is the establishment of Xiong'an New Area as a cutting-edge, modern city, and transportation infrastructure plays a central role in that ambition.
The provincial recommendations stress the importance of high-quality transportation networks, including major projects that aim to enhance the region’s connectivity. Among these is the research on maglev trains, a high-speed transportation system that could revolutionize travel between the national capital, Beijing, and the new city of Xiong'an. According to experts, the inclusion of maglev technology in the plan indicates that it is now considered a critical element for future transport solutions between the two regions, with potential for large-scale implementation.
Railway expert Sun Zhang, from Shanghai's Tongji University, commented that Xiong'an's designation as a hub for scientific and technological development makes the exploration of maglev trains highly significant. Not only would this research contribute to innovations in transportation, but it would also strengthen Xiong'an’s position as a destination for top-tier researchers, technology companies, and innovation-driven resources. By fostering such an environment, Xiong'an aims to attract both local and international talent, helping it to realize its vision of becoming a global leader in technological advancements.
The proposed maglev project forms part of a larger strategy to enhance regional infrastructure and promote deeper integration within the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region. In addition to the maglev train development, the province is set to advance a range of connectivity projects aimed at improving the accessibility of this economically important area. This includes expanding highways, improving rail systems, and creating a world-class airport and port cluster in the BTH region. These infrastructure developments will play a pivotal role in accelerating regional integration and improving the daily mobility of residents and businesses alike.
Maglev technology, which has gained significant traction worldwide, is seen as a key tool for the future of high-speed travel. Although China started its development of maglev systems relatively late compared to other countries, the nation has rapidly caught up by leveraging a model of importing foreign technology, assimilating it, and then innovating domestically. The country’s strides in this area were marked by the unveiling of a new high-speed maglev train in 2021, which can reach speeds of up to 600 km/h. This new train was developed by China Railway Rolling Stock Corp (CRRC), showcasing the country’s progress in mastering the full suite of maglev technologies—from system integration and vehicle production to power supply, rail trails, and transport control.
Sun Zhang emphasized that China's maglev technology is now highly advanced, with a well-established reserve of knowledge and expertise. The introduction of commercial maglev systems would bridge the speed gap between high-speed rail and air travel, which would significantly boost the country's high-speed transport network. Furthermore, it would enhance inter-city connectivity within urban clusters, such as the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, which is vital for supporting the rapid growth and economic integration of these cities.
In conclusion, the research into maglev trains is a crucial part of Hebei's broader strategy to modernize and future-proof its transportation infrastructure. The implementation of these technologies would improve the efficiency and environmental sustainability of the region’s transportation networks, while also positioning Xiong'an as a forward-thinking, innovative city. The success of the maglev project would serve as a model for high-speed transportation systems, potentially influencing other regions in China and abroad.

CAN reach speeds of 600 km/h.
At present the mockup has to be pushed by hand.
Why not just buy the proven SC maglev off Japan.
China drives the TBM tunnels that Japan can't and Japan installs the SC maglev in Australia and we will not have any reason to buy a sub.
