Pipe§net Maglev: Transforming Freight Transport in Italy with Magnetic Levitation
Pipe§net Maglev is an innovative freight transport system developed by RSE and RFI in Italy, combining magnetic levitation and vacuum tube technology to enhance efficiency and sustainability. The project aims to provide eco-friendly, high-speed logistics solutions, with testing taking place at RFI’s Bologna San Donato site.
The system moves cargo at speeds up to one ton per second, powered by solar panels for clean energy. Vacuum tubes reduce friction, cutting energy consumption and boosting efficiency. Linear motors recover up to 70% of energy, with solar panels and batteries providing additional power. Pipe§net Maglev can handle up to 1.5 billion capsules annually, connecting ports and industrial hubs, improving logistics, and reducing environmental impact.
RSE CEO Franco Cotana highlighted that the system lowers costs and CO₂ emissions, offering a greener alternative to traditional freight methods. Pipe§net Maglev supports Italy’s leadership in sustainable transport by promoting eco-friendly logistics practices. The system’s flexible design ensures optimized, fast, and efficient freight delivery.
By advancing rail transport infrastructure, Pipe§net Maglev offers a cost-effective, high-speed, and eco-friendly solution for modern supply chains. The technology sets a new standard for freight transport in Italy and could inspire other countries to adopt similar green logistics systems, making freight solutions smarter, cleaner, and more affordable.
