Air friction reduction - latest research on surface coatings?

Hi all,

I wonder what is the state of the art technology for surface coatings that can make drastic reduction in air friction in maglev trains? What is the future potential of such research?

The last piece of info that seemed convincing was to use a fine, rough surface like that found in sharks. The small eddies that arise on the skin of the shark in the water reduce the overall resistance in the water when moving quickly. All of this together with an elongated nose - like the Japanese maglev?
The shark idea is no longer new. But it is the last original idea from bionics that I became aware of.

Here is a general article about the Fraunhofer research group that has ben investigating the shark skin effect since about 2005.
