Maryland’s Maglev Proposal: High-Speed Ambitions Meet Local Opposition

Maryland’s proposed Superconducting Magnetic Levitation (SCMAGLEV) project aims to connect Baltimore and Washington, D.C., with a high-speed train capable of reaching over 300 mph, reducing travel time between the cities to just 15 minutes[1][2]. The $10 billion-plus project, led by the Maryland Department of Transportation and Baltimore-Washington Rapid Rail, has been under consideration for decades, with proponents highlighting benefits such as reduced highway congestion, economic growth, and the creation of tens of thousands of jobs[3][2]. Supporters argue the train could revitalize the region’s economy and provide a rapid, green transit alternative[2].

However, the project faces significant opposition from residents along the proposed route, particularly in Prince George’s County and communities like Bladensburg and Greenbelt[4]. Many locals feel excluded from the decision-making process and express concerns about the train’s potential to disrupt neighborhoods, its high cost, and the likelihood that it would primarily serve out-of-town travelers rather than local commuters[4]. Governor Wes Moore’s recent public support for maglev technology during a visit to Japan has reignited fears that the stalled project might move forward, despite years of community resistance[4].

The environmental review process, led by the Federal Railroad Administration, is currently paused as of August 2021, following extensive public comments and agency consultations[1][5][6]. The pause allows for further assessment of the project’s environmental impact, funding, and coordination with federal agencies. The review must address concerns about property impacts, environmental justice, and historic preservation[5][6].

While some local leaders and labor groups continue to support the maglev for its potential economic impact and job creation, the future of the project remains uncertain, hinging on the outcome of the ongoing environmental review and the state’s response to strong community opposition[3][4].

Do it underground, it is just as cheap and far more secure.
