Moscow Urban Maglev tests

The Moscow Institute of Thermal Engineering Corporation (MIT, part of Roscosmos) began testing rolling stock in the capital on August 26 on a new monorail system, which is based on magnetic levitation technology. This info is reported by the Russian news agency TASS on August 27, 2021.

The purpose of the tests is to find new technical solutions and the confirmation of the characteristics associated with the "implementation of maglev technology".

The MIT claims that the Maglev technology in the monorail transportation system is characterized by quick construction and commissioning, low noise and energy consumption, as well as easy maintenance. The future of the project depends on the success of the tests - if no problems are identified, the new type of transport will be offered for Russian cities. In the future the movement of the monorail is possible in unmanned mode.

It is a probably interesting aspect that the Russian Maglev is developed by the "Moscow Institute of Thermal Engineering" - an institute tha is also a developer of intercontinental ballistic missiles "Topol", "Topol-M", "Yars" and "Bulava". In the USSR, maglev developments were conducted in the late 70s of the last century, but beyond the prototypes it did not go further.

Yuri Solomonov, designer of the Institute of Thermal Engineering, talks about a cheap and efficient analogue of the obsolete Moscow monorail.



"A train that does not touch the surface of the rail as it moves, but is set in motion by the force of an electromagnetic field" - this phrase might seem like a fiction from the category of levitation, but it is a real achievement of the scientific world. The principle of MAGLEV (magnetic levitation technology of electric rolling stock) successfully operates in China, but few people know that in the capital of our homeland in the Otradnoe area at the Institute of Thermal Engineering there is such a unique functioning prototype. However, it is worth cautioning at once - yes, a slight push can move the MAGLEV off the rails, but it is protected from this by special "bumpers" on the outer sides of the rails, which hold the car. In fact, MAGLEV is a high-tech successor of the Moscow monorail. The latter was also "born" here at the Institute of Thermal Engineering.

"MAGLEV is the next step in the monorail technology, where the wheels are removed and stabilization (what is related to lateral stability from different "loads" when moving along curvilinear sections of the trajectory) is also provided by electromagnetic forces. These technologies have been replicated throughout the world in varying degrees of readiness. Everything that is connected with the transport of the future, I am absolutely convinced, is connected with these technologies. In Russia, we have proposed MAGLEV for several agglomerations as transport technologies. From what we have in the plan to date, this is the Leningrad region. Another one we offered was Krasnodar. I met with Alexander Beglov, we offered the same thing to St. Petersburg. Yuri Solomonov, MAGLEV designer and doctor of technical sciences, says.

An indisputable advantage of the MAGLEV over most public transportation means is the low cost of its operation and quick self-repayment. For example, the construction of MAGLEV will be ten times cheaper than that of the subway. And the cost of its operation is five times less than that of the subway.

"If you compare it to other means of transport, such as the streetcar or the trolleybus, you have to understand that all of these vehicles are subsidized, they are not self-sustaining. In this sense, according to our assessment and that of independent experts, the MAGLEV is very competitive. It is an absolutely environmentally friendly mode of transport. And the accumulated experience of monorail operation shows that such type of transport is in demand among the population," - Solomonov said.

MAGLEV may become an excellent alternative to the Moscow monorail. Because recently there was a question of stopping its work - people complain about too long intervals in its schedule.

"Originally, for five to ten years, the time interval of the monorail was from three to five minutes. There was a certain number of trains. Whether it was ten or twelve, where each train had a minimum of five cars. They were in operation, because it's quite a complicated system, it needs to be constantly maintained in a workable state. Regulations have to be made, cooperation has to be maintained. The developer, as a rule, is in charge of the operation. Because he is the documentation holder, he knows everything about the system. After Luzhkov left, it was decided to transfer maintenance issues to the Metropolitan. They set up their own maintenance service. It ended up that the cooperation practically ceased to exist, and out of ten or twelve trains a third remained. The rest are standing because there are no spare parts. This resulted in such long intervals in traffic," explains Yuri Solomonov.

According to the developer, this problem has nothing to do with the Western sanctions imposed on Russia, but the Institute of Thermal Engineering received a huge number of appeals from residents who asked to solve this problem. The number of cars and the interval of MAGLEV should be fully adapted to the needs of people.

"We will provide as many cars as we need - just analyze the passenger flow. MAGLEV, like the monorail, can operate in a completely unmanned mode. It will operate on a completely modern level with a remotely controlled mode of travel. Arrival at the station is also automatic, there will be speed sensors, brakes. The pilot simply controls the execution of those commands, which are displayed on the computer. But in case of an emergency, he "intervenes" manually. Just like in an airplane. It monitors the passage of that traffic, which is recorded in the pilot task and in the memory of the machine. MAGLEV is a development of the monorail," assures Yuri Solomonov.

The designer noted that the Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin was presented with proposals on how the infrastructure of the monorail could be adapted to the MAGLEV technology. This, of course, requires minor revisions. Solomonov also stated his readiness to provide with MAGLEV intercity communication as well.
