Transrapid in Lathen

Is this how the Transrapid in Lathen is to become interesting for tourists again?

The Transrapid is to become a tourist attraction again in Lathen - that is the plan. Results should be visible in spring 2022. With a sponsoring association, the Transrapid is to become a tourist flagship for Lathen again. The initiators of a support association reportedly register great interest from "Transrapid fans" for cooperation.
The space for a museum is there, as not much has changed since the suspension of the trial operations, according to Mr. Ansgar Schlüter. He is employed as an engineer at the company Intis. The company, headquartered in Hamburg, develops induction systems on the former test site.

Getting rid of the "lost place" image

After the initial reporting on the founding of the association, Mr. Holtermann received many letters from interested parties. "These are 'Transrapid fans' and people who have ridden the trains here over the years. Some of them also have the appropriate financial means to be able to make a difference," Holtermann said. Money is needed, among other things, to restore the remaining trains that are still on the site. The TR07 directly behind a fence on Hermann-Kemper-Strasse is now known as a "lost place" on social networks, he said. "We want to get rid of this image, which is why the first trains are to be spruced up again this winter if possible," Holtermann emphasizes.

Among other things, the seals that have become porous over the years must be renewed. The train has to be re-foiled so that it stands out bright red again. The cost of the refurbishment would still have to be determined.

Lathen had been connected to the Transrapid for years. Now one wants to show the technology with pride to the people and bring it out of the years of dormancy, emphasizes Samtgemeinde mayor Helmut Wilkens. Among other things, the first Transrapid from the late 1970s, the 'Comet,' has been lying dormant in a barn in our community for years, as have the first control panels of the trains from back then.

The association is now the legal basis for the community of interest, he said. "To set an example, we as a municipality have earmarked 10,000 euros in the 2021 budget to support measures to develop the association," Wilkens said. In addition, he said, a letter of intent has been sent to Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier and Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer together with the Emsland district. "Of course, we also need support from Berlin, because the dismantling of the test track is still on the table," Wilkens explains.

Ansgar Schlüter adds: "Transrapid technology is not dead either. China has built a train based on the development work in Emsland." In view of climate change, the time for further developments has long since arrived, says Norbert Holtermann.
