If you think of the Max Bögl company today, the Transport System Bögl (TSB) certainly comes to mind immediately. But the Max Bögl Group has already had experience with the development of the Transrapid guideway since 1996. From hybrid guideways to concrete bending switches: This article informs you about the most relevant Bögl guideway types.

The beginning
In 1996, Bögl came up with the idea of combining steel guideway and concrete guideway. Thus, the first prototype of the hybrid guideway was developed in 1999, which was installed on the TVE for the first time in 1999.

The hybrid guideway
The hybrid girder delivers first-class ride comfort. The damping properties of the steel guideway have been combined with the long durability and low corrosion of the concrete guideway to create an almost perfect girder. The hybrid girders also have the advantage of remaining deformation-free and true to shape at all temperatures. The best example was at the end of the 90s, when due to heat on the TVE some steel girders bent by up to 6 mm (!) in the middle.

In the case of hybrid girders, the individual components are subdivided into:
  • Concrete span (main structure)
  • Functional level module (combination of slide rail, guide rail and stator packages)
But this form of track also has disadvantages. The main one is the noise level, which is about 5 db(a) higher than with successors due to the gap between the prestressed concrete girder and the functional level module.

In addition, corrosion, especially at the brackets between the main tensioning system and the functional level modules, cannot be ruled out.

The hybrid guideway was developed as part of the Hamburg-Berlin project. The SMT (🇨🇳Shanghai Transrapid) line consists entirely of this guideway type (2nd generation). Even back then, China was very interested in producing individual parts in China. At that time, however, only the guideway was produced there, as it would be nonsensical to manufacture such a large number of guideway elements in Germany and then ship them to China. Bögl therefore saved production costs by awarding the licenses to a Chinese concrete construction company, which produced the girders on behalf of the SMT line.

In China, the second generation of the hybrid girder with a span of 25 m is in use. One of the differences is that the girders have been adapted to the urban environment by modifying the concrete span girders on the underside to make them sound-absorbent.
