[JP] New tunnel in the Minami Alps (Shizuoka Pref.)

Unread post by latestnews »

JR Central (JR東海) announced on August 29th that it will begin the main construction of a new tunnel on the Minami Alps Park Prefectural Road in Aoi Ward, Shizuoka City in September. This project is part of regional development efforts related to the Linear Chuo Shinkansen's Shizuoka section. The tunnel will span approximately 4.7 kilometers, passing directly beneath Mount Mitsumine (1,350 meters) and will connect the Ikawa and Tamagawa districts. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for September 12th, with the tunnel expected to be completed by the end of the 2027 fiscal year.

The new tunnel will serve as a shortcut, bypassing the winding and narrow sections of the current Minami Alps Park Prefectural Road and Mitsumine Ochiai Prefectural Road, reducing travel time between the city center and the Ikawa district by about 20 minutes. Additionally, vehicles involved in the construction of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen’s South Alps Tunnel will use this route.

The city of Shizuoka and JR Central signed a basic agreement on regional development in June 2018, under which JR Central will fully fund the tunnel construction, while the city will improve the road sections before and after the tunnel. Since February 2022, JR Central has been preparing the site, including building temporary roads and construction yards.

JR Central Opens Linear Chuo Shinkansen Minami-Koma Tunnel to the Public for the First Time

On November 9, JR Central (Central Japan Railway Company) held the first public viewing of the construction site for the First Minami-Koma Tunnel in Fujikawa Town, Yamanashi Prefecture.

The tunnel, part of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen (maglev bullet train) project, is about 800 meters long, 12.8 meters wide, and 7.6 meters high. Excavation began in March 2022 and was completed in October 2023.

The site is positioned as a symbolic “gateway” into Nagano Prefecture along the future maglev route that will connect Tokyo with Nagoya, passing through the Kofu Basin.

[JP] Minami-Koma Maglev Tunnel

Unread post by latestnews »

The tunnel broke through in October 2023. The upper section’s sprayed concrete lining has been completed, and work is now underway on the lower invert section. JR Central determined that conditions were sufficiently safe to allow guided tours.

Inside the tunnel, visitors could view an overview video on the Chuo Shinkansen Maglev and use AR displays to visualize what the completed tunnel structure will look like. Many participants remarked on the scale of the structure.

Kazuma Suzuki, head of JR Central’s Yamanashi West Construction Office, emphasized the significance of the event, stating that many visitors showed strong interest. The open day was held in coordination with the local Koshu Fujikawa Festival and JR Central’s Sawayaka Walking event, which also brought additional visitors. Suzuki noted that he hopes the event will help promote local attractions.

In Fujikawa Town, construction is currently underway in two separate work sections. The section including the First Minamikoma Tunnel (approx. 3.9 km) is being built by a Taisei Corporation / Hayano Construction JV. The Fourth Minamikoma Tunnel (eastern section, approx. 6.0 km) is being built by an Obayashi Corporation / Konoike Construction JV. Tunnel excavation progress in both sections is currently at around 40%.

If they want to sell the SC maglev it must remove trucks and planes with a TBM driven 14 m diameter straight tunnel with passing stations at cities.
