JR Tokai has linked ground subsidence in Gifu Prefecture's Mizunami City to its Linear Central Shinkansen tunnel construction, citing a high likelihood from water level drops. The issue emerged after flooding during excavation in February last year, leading to well water declines and soil compression. Compensation for affected homes follows national standards, with work suspended since May.
Incident Details
Subsidence near the Otodo Town tunnel site reached up to 7.7 cm by January 14 from late May last year. Satellite data and borehole surveys confirmed correlation with lowered groundwater compressing sand and clay layers. JR Tokai shifted from earlier ambiguity to admitting construction causation on January 18.
Response Measures
Work halted in May after initial subsidence detection, with surveys completed on 47 homes by mid-January. Compensation begins per government criteria for damaged residences. Further subsidence of several centimeters remains possible.
