Groundwater 'selenium' below standard?

Regarding the issue of selenium, a heavy metal that exceeds environmental standards, being detected in groundwater at a temporary storage site for soil generated during excavation work for the Linear Central Shinkansen, the prefectural government announced on 29 April that a new test conducted by JR Tokai at the temporary storage site did not detect selenium exceeding environmental standards.

On 9 April, 1.4 times the environmental standard for selenium was found in groundwater at a temporary storage site in the Shiojima area of Hayakawa city.

According to the prefecture, on 24 April, JR Tokai re-tested the groundwater at three locations in the temporary storage site, including the detection site, and found no selenium above the environmental standard in any of them.

The prefectural government will continue to cooperate with JR Tokai and to carry out regular monitoring.
