JR Tokai President Says Financial Burden Will Be Eased Even if Linear Line Startup is Delayed
At a press conference held on March 30, JR Tokai President Shunsuke Niwa stated that the financial impact of not opening the Linear Central Shinkansen (between Shinagawa and Nagoya) in 2027 "will be reduced as revenues from the Tokaido Shinkansen and other lines will accumulate (before construction costs are paid), which will reduce our borrowings. He believes that the increase in construction costs due to the extended construction period will not be as great, and as a result, the financial burden will be eased.
At a meeting of experts held at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism at the end of March, President Niwa stated that "we are not in a position to realize" the 2027 opening. He stated that he "cannot foresee" a new opening date, but the construction of a tunnel in Shizuoka Prefecture, where construction has not yet begun, is expected to take about 10 years, and the opening is likely to be delayed until after 2034 at the earliest.
At a press conference that day, Mr. Niwa commented on the impact of the prolonged construction, "It does not mean that the content of the work will change. There is a possibility that the cost of construction will increase due to the extended time required for personnel and equipment, but it will not have a significant impact on the overall cost of construction," he explained.
