JR Central (JR東海) announced on August 29th that it will begin the main construction of a new tunnel on the Minami Alps Park Prefectural Road in Aoi Ward, Shizuoka City in September. This project is part of regional development efforts related to the Linear Chuo Shinkansen's Shizuoka section. The tunnel will span approximately 4.7 kilometers, passing directly beneath Mount Mitsumine (1,350 meters) and will connect the Ikawa and Tamagawa districts. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for September 12th, with the tunnel expected to be completed by the end of the 2027 fiscal year.
The new tunnel will serve as a shortcut, bypassing the winding and narrow sections of the current Minami Alps Park Prefectural Road and Mitsumine Ochiai Prefectural Road, reducing travel time between the city center and the Ikawa district by about 20 minutes. Additionally, vehicles involved in the construction of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen’s South Alps Tunnel will use this route.
The city of Shizuoka and JR Central signed a basic agreement on regional development in June 2018, under which JR Central will fully fund the tunnel construction, while the city will improve the road sections before and after the tunnel. Since February 2022, JR Central has been preparing the site, including building temporary roads and construction yards.
