Lime Dust from Linear Chuo Shinkansen Construction Stains Vehicles and Laundry in Machida

On December 5, 2024, JR Tokai reported that lime dust scattered around the construction site of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen in Machida, Tokyo. The lime affected nearby vehicles, leaving stains on car windows and laundry. The incident occurred near the "Kataihira Emergency Exit" construction area, between Kawasaki and Machida, during tunnel work. At approximately 10 a.m., local residents notified JR Tokai about the lime dust, prompting the company to inspect over 40 nearby homes. By December 6, they had received 8 complaints, including reports of dirty windows and white laundry. No health issues were reported. The lime dust is believed to have been blown by strong winds while workers were mixing excavated soil with lime in an outdoor yard. Construction was temporarily halted, but work resumed with precautions, including mixing lime more gradually. JR Tokai has pledged to guide contractors to proceed carefully and address any future complaints appropriately.
