Construction of Linear Shinkansen Train Depot Begins in Sagamihara: 60 Hectares of Forest and Other Large-Scale Creation
Construction of the Kanto rail yard, which will be located in the Toriya area of Midori Ward, Sagamihara City, on the Linear Central Shinkansen Line currently under construction by JR Tokai, began on April 25. This is one of the two train yards that will be built between Shinagawa and Nagoya, and will be constructed on a large scale by cutting and filling a mountainous area. On the same day, a safety prayer was held at the construction site.
The Kanto rail yard will be located at an elevation of 304 meters, 9 kilometers from the new “Kanagawa Station (tentative name),” which is under construction near JR Hashimoto Station, in the direction of Nagoya on the main line, and 4 kilometers further on the south side of a branch line. The line will extend approximately 2 km and have a maximum width of approximately 500 m. Approximately 60 hectares of forest and other land will be developed for the construction of a railcar detention line and an inspection depot. It will overlook the village along the Kushi River to the east.
Local officials attended a prayer for the safety of the Kanto railcar depot at Toriya, Midori-ku, Sagamihara City, on March 25.
The construction work will be carried out by cutting down the mountains and filling in the valleys to create a flat landform. The maximum height of the cut soil is approximately 60 meters, and the maximum height of the fill is approximately 25 meters.
Since the land to be created straddles four streams that connect to the Kushi River, a replacement channel will be installed underground, and two regulating reservoirs will also be constructed. Prefectural Road 64, which runs east-west through the center of the site, will be replaced and the road will be widened. A biotope and observation plaza will be constructed on the west side.
