Strong Hopes, Lingering Disappointment: Iida Survey Reveals Mixed Feelings on Delayed Maglev Project
Younger and Older Generations Show Waning Enthusiasm Amid Postponement
Iida Shinkin Bank (Iida City) has released the results of a public opinion survey conducted after JR Central announced in March last year that the Linear Chuo Shinkansen would not open in 2027 as initially planned. The earliest possible launch is now projected for 2035 or later.
Despite the long delay, around 80% of respondents still expressed “high expectations” for the maglev train, showing sustained interest in the project. However, the survey also revealed that disappointment was particularly evident among younger and older residents—groups that had previously shown the strongest anticipation.
The annual survey has been conducted by Iida Shinkin’s Minami-Shinshu Regional Research Institute nearly every year since 2013.
