JR Central Highlights Maglev's Role in Japan’s Economic and Mobility Future at Osaka Expo
At the Osaka-Kansai Expo, JR Central President Shunsuke Niwa highlighted the Chuo Shinkansen’s potential to transform Japan’s economy through faster intercity travel, increased productivity, and innovation driven by greater human interaction.
The event, part of the Expo’s “Future Communities and Mobility” theme, also showcased the maglev’s disaster resilience and environmental advantages over air travel.
Officials including Jingo Kikukawa (Ministry of Economy) and Fujiyo Ishiguro (World Economic Forum Japan) praised the project’s potential to link key tech hubs and reduce disaster risks.
Construction is ongoing between Tokyo and Nagoya, but delays in Shizuoka mean completion won’t happen before 2035. The Osaka extension lacks a clear timeline.

Japan is too small to have SC maglev overnight container trains to subsidise daytime trains so they should develop an overnight container train to be used in big countries stuck with trucks and planes.
