Construction of All Stations Between the Linear Shinagawa-Nagoya Route to Begin, Construction Contract for Yamanashi Prefecture Station Signed, Steady Progress in Areas Outside Shizuoka

JR Central announced on the 17th that it has signed a construction contract for the Yamanashi Prefecture station of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen (located in Kofu City and Chuo City). The construction is planned to start within this fiscal year, with the work scheduled to be completed by December 10, 2031. This brings the goal of starting construction at all stations between Shinagawa and Nagoya closer to realization.

While Shizuoka Prefecture remains the main source of delays due to its refusal to approve construction in the Shizuoka section, negotiations between the prefecture and JR Central are progressing steadily. The specific opening date, previously set for "after 2027," is still awaited.

According to JR Central, the contract was signed on the 17th. Going forward, detailed planning and consultations with local residents will take place in preparation for the construction. JR Central representatives stated, "Construction is now underway for all stations. We aim to open as soon as possible."

Regarding the Linear Shinkansen, the section between Shinagawa and Nagoya (about 286 kilometers in total) will feature stations in the prefectures of Kanagawa, Yamanashi, Nagano, and Gifu. The land acquisition rate for this section is already close to 90%, and approximately 80% of the soil from construction is already designated for disposal.

However, Shizuoka Prefecture has been concerned about the potential impact on water resources and the ecosystem of the Southern Alps, leading to delays in approving the construction of the Shizuoka section (8-9 kilometers). This has caused a delay in the overall plan. JR Central has withdrawn its initial goal of opening in 2027 and has not set a new timeline.

That said, after the change of leadership from former Governor Heita Kawakatsu to current Governor Yasuto Suzuki, Shizuoka Prefecture has shown signs of softening its stance. The most significant concern regarding water resources has been resolved, with JR Central’s proposed solutions now accepted, and discussions continue on remaining issues, such as the impact on the ecosystem.

Additionally, the construction of the material storage yards (known as "yards") near the construction sites, which former Governor Kawakatsu had firmly rejected, is now being considered for environmental survey purposes. If progress continues, these yards could be converted into construction sites, potentially speeding up the work schedule.

JR Central estimates that construction in the Shizuoka section will take at least 10 years from the start to completion, but it plans to continue steadily progressing the rest of the project by distributing resources across other sections.

Construction Begins on Maglev Station in Yamanashi

JR Central has announced the contractor for the construction of the new Linear Yamanashi Station, marking the official start of the project. This station, part of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen, will feature a unique design where a high-speed train station is directly connected to a "smart interchange" on the highway.

The station will be located about 7 km south of JR Kofu Station and will be the only station for the Linear Chuo Shinkansen in the area. The closest station is JR Minobu Line's Koigawa Station, about 3 km away, with shuttle buses planned to connect the two.

The station will be an elevated structure with two platforms and the ticket gates located on the second floor. A north-south passageway will connect the first and second floors, with the second floor designed to be above the maximum anticipated flood levels for disaster response. The construction will involve the creation of a 960-meter-long elevated bridge, a 130-meter bridge, and about 15,000 square meters of structural space. The project is expected to be completed by December 10, 2031.

To the north of the station, a transportation plaza, parking lot, and a "smart interchange" on the Chuo Expressway are planned. The southern area will be developed as a public-private partnership zone to create a vibrant area. The station will also feature the "Fujitram," a rubber-tired transit system connecting the station to Mount Fuji, further enhancing its role as a major transportation hub.
