Calls to Abandon the Linear Chuo Shinkansen Project After Ground Uplift in Tokyo
On October 30, Akira Koike, Secretary-General of the Japanese Communist Party (JCP), and Taku Yamazoe, the party’s Policy Committee Chair and a member of the Upper House, inspected a site in Tokyo’s Shinagawa Ward where the ground reportedly rose by up to 13 centimeters around October 28, near the Linear Chuo Shinkansen construction area.
They were accompanied by Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly member Tomoko Tanaka, Shinagawa Ward Assembly member Chihiro Ishida, and others, guided by local representatives from the “Shinagawa Residents’ Association to Stop the Linear Project.”
Residents had noticed the ground deformation on the 28th and posted photos on social media, also reporting a loud noise early that morning.
Koike stated that “in addition to this serious accident, total construction costs have ballooned to 11 trillion yen. The project should be halted, and the Linear plan abandoned,” urging the national government and JR Central to reconsider.
Ishida added that while the ward mayor’s quick response was commendable, construction should not resume until the cause is fully investigated, emphasizing the need to reflect residents’ concerns and ensure accountability from JR Central.
Following the site visit, the citizens’ group submitted a written request to JR Central’s Tokyo office, calling for a complete investigation, suspension of construction, and a direct public briefing between company representatives and local residents.
