Tunnel boring machine merger Japan

Unread post by Eurorapid »

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. and Hitachi Zosen Corporation will merge their tunneling "shield machine" businesses in October. The new company will be the second largest after JIM, with sales estimated to be around 20 billion yen, the largest in Japan. With the reorganization, these two companies will be the only domestic manufacturers of large machines with a diameter of 10 meters or more.

The reason behind the reorganization is the shrinking domestic market. The market will be strong for a few years, but is expected to shrink, when the construction of the Linear Maglev Central Shinkansen will be completed. Overseas, infrastructure development is accelerating in emerging countries, especially in subways, and the market size is likely to expand.

The domestic market for shield machines is expected to taper off. According to Kawasaki Heavy Industries, domestic demand is relatively strong at present, but it is expected to decline from around 2025, when construction work for the Central Linear Railway Shinkansen and subways will begin to decline. As the spread of the new coronavirus worsens the business conditions of railroad companies, it is undeniable that this may have an impact on scheduled construction.

On the other hand, the overseas market is expected to continue to expand, especially for subway construction in India and Southeast Asia, and some believe that the market size will be about 10 times larger than the domestic market.

Kita-Shinagawa construction area

Unread post by Miss Maglev »

On Tuesday, October 12, 2021, JR Tokai announced that it will start digging in the Kita-Shinagawa section of the Linear Central Shinkansen Line [...] on Thursday, October 14.

"In the Kita-Shinagawa construction area, the "Kita-Shinagawa emergency exit," a vertical hole connecting the surface and underground, has been completed, and the "Higashi-Yukigaya emergency exit" and "Todoroki emergency exit" are currently under excavation. In this construction area, shield machines will be used to excavate underground to a maximum depth of 90 meters [...] .

From the 14th, "investigative excavation" will be carried out until the end of fiscal year 2021, prior to the main excavation. The purpose of this is to confirm ground displacement and vibration caused by the excavation, and to utilize this information for safety measures and construction management during the main excavation. Measurements will be taken at the excavation site as well as on the ground to confirm whether there are any deformations and to what extent vibrations are generated.

In the future, based on the results of the survey excavation, we plan to hold an explanatory meeting for local residents and make preparations for the main excavation.

The shield machine for the Kita-Shinagawa section will be assembled on site [...]. The digging speed for the main excavation will be about 400 meters per month.
