Construction begins on JR Maglev Chubu Maintencance Yard in Gifu

English translation of Japanese Media Report (Tomura Noboru).

On the 14th, JR Tokai started construction of the Chubu General Maglev Train Depot (Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture) for the Linear Central Shinkansen. The construction work will be completed by September 2025 on a gently sloping site with a maximum of about 30 meters of fill.

JR Tokai has acquired about 60 hectares of the city's Chitanbayashi and Komaba areas, and will develop about 50 hectares of land for the railcar base. The total length of the base is about 2 kilometers and the maximum width is 0.4 kilometers. It will be the only base where trains can be assembled and disassembled for maintenance.

The total length of the line in Gifu Prefecture is 55.1 km, and 6.5 km of it runs above ground. In Nakatsugawa City, a four-story Gifu Prefecture Station (tentative name) will be built near Minosakamoto Station on the Chuo Line.

The contract for the 2000m-long, 400m-wide depot was awarded on March 18 2020, with the site set to cover 50 hectares.

In addition to facilities such as maintenance and inspection roads, Chubu depot will have a factory where new rolling stock will be assembled and overhauled.

The other maintenance depot will be constructed at Sagamihara to the west of Tokyo.
