Osaka Maglev Station (Urban Redeveloment)

Redevelopment of Shin-Osaka area:
Shin-Osaka Station is expected to change drastically

A large-scale project is already underway to build a Maglev line connecting Shinagawa Station in Tokyo to Shin-Osaka Station via Nagoya Station, with a view to opening the entire line in 2037.
It will take only 67 minutes non-stop from Shinagawa Station (in Tokyo) to Shin-Osaka Station by Maglev. Shin-Osaka Station will then not only serve as a transportation hub for Kansai and western Japan, but also as a terminal station connecting Japan and other parts of Asia.

The construction and opening of the Linear-Central Shinkansen (Maglev) is therefore expected to bring about major changes to Shin-Osaka Station. According to the "Framework for Urban Development Policy for the Shin-Osaka Station Area Urban Renewal and Urgent Development Area," compiled by the Osaka Prefectural Government and the Osaka City Government based on the concept of creating a new town for the next 20 to 30 years, Shin-Osaka Station is expected to become "one of the largest wide-area transportation terminals in Japan.

The Shin-Osaka area is therefore undergoing an urban transformation from a transit point for businessmen and domestic and international travelers to a business and activity hub. With such a redevelopment of the Shin-Osaka Station and of the surrounding areas, land prices in Shin-Osaka are expected to continue to rise in the future.

As it will take just about an hour to get from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka Station by Maglev, it is expected that Tokyo-based companies will increasingly come under pressure to expand or relocate to the Kansai region.

As an example, Nomura Real Estate Development has already decided to open an major office building in the Kansai area for the first time in about 10 years. JR West Real Estate Development is also constructing an office building on the north side of Shin-Osaka Station, scheduled to open in the spring of 2022.

Not only office buildings, but also lodging facilities are opening one after another, with hotel chains such as Hotel WBF, APA Hotel, and Meitetsu Inn opening in Shin-Osaka in 2020. Preparations are steadily underway, starting with the area around the station, to prepare for the arrival of the maglev.

Shin-Osaka Station is the well-known land gateway to Osaka and one of Japan's major transportation terminals. Currently, it is the only station in Osaka that is served by the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen lines, as well as the Tokaido Main Line, JR Osakahigashi Line and Midosuji Line of Osaka Metro.
