Nakatsugawa/Gifu to become a "MaglevCity": the expected effects
A promotion of Tourism and Industry by Building Stations, Factories, and Train Depots?

Report in Japanese by Naoki Osaka : Reporter, Toyo Keizai.

A linear line is coming to Nakatsugawa City. The Gifu Prefecture Station (tentative name) of the Linear-Central Shinkansen will be built near the Minosakamoto Station on the Chuo Line in the city. In addition, a railroad depot will be built in the city to house and maintain the trains. A railroad depot will also be built in Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, but only Nakatsugawa will have a factory where trains can be assembled and overhauled.

Nakatsugawa is the only city in Japan that will have a plant for assembling and overhauling railroad cars. "We have the great advantage of having a station and a railroad base. Nakatsugawa is the only city in Japan that has a plant that can overhaul the trains.

Nakatsugawa City, with its flourishing industry, is facing an inevitable decline in population and aging society. In such a situation, the linear maglev will be a savior to overcome the situation.

Most of the section of the linear line connecting Tokyo and Nagoya will be underground or in tunnels, and there are only a few places where you can see the trains with your own eyes. The Gifu station will be built above ground, but the elevated bridge will be covered with a hood up to the ceiling and soundproof walls on both sides, so it is not clear if you will actually be able to see the trains running.

However, since the depot will be built above ground, it will be possible to see the trains being transported between the main line and the plant. "The city will also promote the fact that you can see the trains as a tourism measure.

The opening of the Linear-Motorcycle line will be a great benefit to the city, but as the construction of stations, bridges, tunnels, and other facilities, as well as the railroad depot, begin in earnest, the noise and vibration on the roads caused by the transportation of residual soil and the impact of the development on the local environment will become a matter of concern. Mayor Aoyama did not forget to give a nudge to JR Tokai, saying, "I hope that you will give maximum consideration to the wishes of the local community and work hard on safety and environmental measures.

As Takashi Namba, deputy governor of Shizuoka Prefecture, who is in charge of linear construction issues, said, "There is no zero risk in difficult construction," all local governments along the linear line must be more or less worried about the environmental impact of the construction.

The difference between the municipalities that gave the go-ahead to the construction knowing that the risk could not be reduced to zero and Shizuoka Prefecture that refused to approve the construction is the benefits that the linear line will bring to the region. The prefectures along the line, except Shizuoka, will benefit from the construction of new stations, but the cities and towns along the Oigawa River basin will only benefit indirectly from the increase in the number of Tokaido Shinkansen trains stopping at their stations after the opening of the linear line. This is very different from Nakatsugawa City, which is expected to revitalize its industry with the construction of a railroad depot.

It will take a long time before the people of Shizuoka Prefecture are convinced of the impact of the construction of the Minami-Alps Tunnel on water resources and the environment, and it may be necessary for JR Tokai to change its perspective and offer benefits to Shizuoka Prefecture other than an increase in the number of Shinkansen stops in order to start construction as soon as possible.

On January 4, Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, released a draft of the "Design Guidelines (Design Book) for the Area around Gifu Linear Station. It shows the design concept and development policy for the area around the station, which will be suitable as "the new eastern gateway of Gifu Prefecture" for the opening of the Central Linear Railway. Based on the themes of "clear streams" and "highways," the project aims to express the "Nakatsugawa character" of nature and highway culture, and to create a space in front of the station that connects the lives of local residents.

The policy for the development of the space as a wide-area transportation hub includes the following six points: (1) compact station functions, (2) smooth transit, (3) gradual development, (4) innovation in new transportation technology, (5) sharing of functions with Nagoya Station, and (6) a multifunctional plaza. The six policies for landscape and environmental improvement are: - A waterfront space in the "Land of Clear Streams" - Utilization of views and scenery - Differences from urban areas - Utilization of local industries - Interaction with local residents - Presentation of history and culture.

According to the image of future land use, the central station square to be built between the Linear Station and the Minosakamoto Station will have a compact transportation plaza that focuses on public transportation and a plaza space that values the view of Mt. The plaza will be barrier-free, allowing smooth transfers from railroads to buses and cabs, and will be made of local materials so that visitors can feel the difference from the city.
Along the Chitambayashi River, a sloping plaza and a park with a water-friendly atmosphere will be built, and a path will be created along the river to provide a space for people to walk around.

On the north side of the linear station, the plaza in front of the north station entrance will be designed as a traffic plaza for private vehicles. A flat parking lot and a multi-story parking lot will be built adjacent to the plaza to ensure smooth and convenient transportation. Convenient facilities for daily life and commercial and accommodation facilities are also planned in the vicinity.

The city will accept citizen opinions on the draft guidelines until March 31, and plans to finalize the draft by the end of March.

Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, has prepared a draft design book for the area around the Gifu Prefectural Station (tentative name) on the Linear Central Shinkansen Line, which will be built in Chitanbayashi, Nakatsugawa City.

The draft guideline has been developed based on the opinions expressed at a design conference chaired by Professor Akiyoshi Takagi of Gifu University and consisting of 23 experts and citizens' representatives, in order to develop the area around the linear station to be suitable for the new eastern entrance of the prefecture.

With the support of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's "Kawamachi Zukuri," a water park will be built along the Chitanbayashi River. The central plaza in front of the station will be used for boarding and alighting buses, express buses, and sightseeing buses, and a short-term parking lot will be built nearby. The plaza in front of the north exit of the linear station will be designed for use by private cars in anticipation of the practical application of automated driving. The draft guideline also introduces the design of a free passageway featuring prefectural wood and the new station building of JR Chuo Line's Minosakamoto Station adjacent to the linear station.

The draft guidelines can be viewed at city hall, city offices, and on the city website. Comments are accepted at the viewing areas or by e-mail. The city will hold explanatory meetings for residents on the draft guidelines at Sakamoto Community Center on November 11, Chuo Community Center on November 16, and Fukuoka Community Center on November 18. Both meetings will begin at 7:00 p.m.

It's striking how little visible the massive Maglev station building is in this rendering. The light gray in this illustration almost looks like the sky above, one could think there is almost no station here. Is it really necessary to show Japanese citizens euphemistic, official renderings instead of more realistic visualizations of the project? True citizen participation would require realistic visualization.

In fact, however, we probably have a significantly different situation. Therefore, above is another visualization based on the original image, which now shows a contrast to the sky and thus gives a better idea of the dimensions of the station and perhaps shows more clearly how the station and its forecourt could look like.

[JP] Gifu Maglev Station: Drinking water temporarily muddy

Unread post by Miss Maglev »

Drinking water temporarily muddy due to water supply replacement work at Gifu Station on the Linear Central Shinkansen Line.

On 5 April, the drinking water in the vicinity of Gifu Station on the Linear Central Shinkansen Line in Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, became muddy due to the replacement of the water supply system.

According to JR Tokai, the drinking water in the northern area of Sendanbayashi, Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, became turbid at around 14:30 on the 5th due to the replacement of the water supply system for the construction work on the Gifu Station of the Linear Central Shinkansen.

The cause of the turbidity was thought to be a change in pressure caused by the removal of a cap from a "temporary" water pipe connected to the water main. After the turbid water was detected, Nakatsugawa City in Gifu Prefecture, which manages the water supply system, opened an emergency water station and the turbid water has now been removed.

No health hazards have been reported as a result of the muddy water.
