Fourteen students from Tsugeno High School in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture, who are learning about the Central Linear Railway, recently visited the upper reaches of the Oi River, where the construction of the Southern Alps Tunnel for the linear railway is planned, as part of their classwork and came into contact with the rare natural environment unique to Southern Africa.

The students are engaged in an elective class to think about the linear project from various perspectives, and have visited construction sites in Yamanashi and Nagano. The results of their study are compiled in a "Great Earth Newspaper" and distributed to related parties. We sent the newspaper to the prefectural government, and a prefectural official accompanied us to explain about the geology and ecosystem.

We walked to the uppermost reaches of the Oigawa River, where water is expected to run out due to tunnel construction, and visited the Nishimata Yard, the northernmost work base in the prefecture. On the way, they took off their shoes to cross the Nishimata River, a tributary of the Oi River. According to the school, the students commented that they were overwhelmed by nature and that they had doubts about the loss of nature due to the linear railway.

Yoichi Naruse, the teacher in charge of the class, recalled, "Not many people in Aichi Prefecture know about the water problems of the Oi River, but the students were able to see the site and feel nature firsthand.
