Mie Prefecture Sets Up 'Linear Propulsion Headquarters' to Evaluate Potential Station Sites


On February 8, 2022, the Mie Prefectural Government established a "Headquarters for Linear Propulsion" in the prefectural office, headed by Governor Katsuyuki Iku.

The task force will evaluate three potential sites proposed by Kameyama City for a station in the prefecture on the linear central maglev linking Tokyo and Osaka, and promote regional development using the linear line. The headquarters will consist of

• the vice governor,

• the director of the strategic planning division,

• the director of the regional cooperation division, and

• the director of the prefectural land development division.

Mie Prefecture to Propose 3 Areas for Linear Central Shinkansen Stations, Not Narrowing Down Candidate Sites


Regarding the Linear Central Shinkansen Line, Mie Prefecture has narrowed the range of candidate sites for an intermediate station to be built in the prefecture to the three areas in Kameyama City that had been proposed, and instead of narrowing it down to a single site, the prefecture has decided to propose three areas for the station to JR Tokai. Interviews with persons concerned revealed that the Mie Prefectural Government has finalized a proposal to Central Japan Railway Company (JR Tokai), narrowing the range of the three areas in Kameyama City that had been proposed.

In October last year, Kameyama City proposed three areas in the city as candidate sites for an intermediate station for the Linear Central Shinkansen Line being constructed by JR Tokai, and Mie Prefecture has been working on the final candidate to be proposed to JR Tokai. Mie Prefecture has been studying the final candidate site proposals to be presented to JR.

As a result, the prefectural government has narrowed the scope of each of the three areas to a more limited area, and has proposed to JR Tokai that the three areas not be narrowed down to a single location, but rather that they all be proposed as candidate locations. Interviews with the persons concerned revealed that the prefectural government has finalized a plan to propose all of the three areas as candidate sites.

Specifically, "Area A" includes JR Idagawa Station in the eastern part of Kameyama City, "Area B" includes the Kameyama Interchange, which connects to the Higashi-Meihan Expressway and National Route 1, and "Area C" includes JR Shimosho Station in the southern part of the city. Area C includes JR Shimosho Station in the southern part of the city.

The prefectural government will make a formal decision on this proposal at an executive meeting on November 1, and then submit it to an extraordinary general meeting of the alliance, which is composed of the prefectural government and related organizations, to be held on November 4.

　On November 1, the Mie Prefecture Linear Promotion Headquarters (headed by Governor Katsuyuki Ijima) held its second meeting at the prefectural government office and presented three candidate sites for the Linear Central Shinkansen station in the prefecture. In selecting the sites, the committee took into consideration the living environment of local residents and excluded urban areas such as the area around Kameyama Station on the JR Kansai Main Line.

Kameyama City announced the following three areas as potential station sites : Near the Idagawa Station on the JR Kansai Line, near the Kameyama Interchange on the Higashi-Meihan Expressway, and near the Shimosho Station on the JR Kisei Line. Each area represents an area of 5 km in diameter.

　After research from the standpoints of development feasibility, transportation convenience, and future development potential, there were no significant differences among the three areas as candidate station sites. Since the decision on the candidate sites must take into account the technical issues involved in constructing the line and station, the study will proceed with the three locations without narrowing it down to one at this time.

Three Maglev Station candidate sites in Mie Prefecture

On April 4, the Mie Prefectural Alliance for the Early Construction of the Linear Central Shinkansen Line held an extraordinary general meeting in Tsu City, and adopted a resolution to be submitted to JR Tokai and other organizations.

The resolution states that the location of the intermediate station in the prefecture "should be a location that can spread the benefits of the construction throughout the prefecture, taking into full consideration the convenience of access by rail and expressway.
In order to determine the location of the station, the resolution states that three areas in Kameyama City will be requested as the final candidate sites from JR Tokai, as per the proposal decided by the prefectural government on Tuesday this week.

The resolution states that construction should begin as soon as possible in order to open the entire line as soon as possible, and requests JR Tokai to fully consider the merits and demerits of each area as compiled by the alliance in order to make a selection.
After the meeting, Kameyama City Mayor Yoshiyuki Sakurai told reporters, "We are entering a new phase of the project, and we will work hard to achieve the early realization of the route and intermediate station in the prefecture in cooperation with related organizations.
The group plans to submit this resolution to the JR Tokai and the national government by the end of this year.

Kameyama City with only 30,000 population and Japanese population shrinking perhaps it may be faster to skip it.
