[JP] Tokyo: JR Tokai to Begin Linear Tunnel " Exploratory Excavation"

Unread post by Miss Maglev »

JR Tokai to Begin Linear Tunnel "Survey Digging" at Three Sites in Kawasaki and Machida by the End of the Fiscal Year, Raising Concerns of Residents Along Line

JR Tokai plans to begin excavation of the first Metropolitan Area Tunnel of the Linear Central Shinkansen Line in Kawasaki City and Machida City, Tokyo, in fiscal 2022 to investigate vibrations above the ground and their impact on the ground. The company plans to dig with three shield machines over a period of about six months, and then move to full-scale excavation this fall or later. The results of the investigation will be reported to residents in the area.
Tunnel with a diameter of 14 meters, more than 40 meters underground
Since October 2020, sinking accidents have occurred in the deep underground tunnel construction of the Tokyo Outer Ring Road (Outer Ring Road) in Chofu City, Tokyo, and residents along the linear rail line have voiced their concerns.
According to JR Tokai, investigations were conducted at the Kajigaya emergency exit (Miyamae-ku, Kawasaki City), Higashi Yurigaoka emergency exit (Aso-ku, Kawasaki City), and Onoji emergency exit (Machida City). All of these tunnels, 14 meters in diameter, will be excavated for 150 to 350 meters toward Nagoya to investigate the impact on the surrounding area.
After that, full-scale construction will begin in the fall at Kajigaya and Onoji, and at the end of FY2011 at Higashi Yurigaoka, with 200 to 400 meters of tunnel excavation each month. From Kajigaya, full-scale excavation will also begin in the direction of Shinagawa.

JR Tokai decided to conduct investigative excavation following the sinking accident in Chofu, and began excavation at the Kitashinagawa emergency exit (Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo) in October 2009. However, due to a breakdown of the excavator, the planned 300-meter dig was halted after 50 meters. The excavation of another deep tunnel near Nagoya City, from the Sakashita emergency exit (Kasugai City, Aichi Prefecture), has not progressed since July last year, when the excavator blade chipped during preparation work.

The Linear Central Shinkansen Line is planned to connect Shinagawa and Nagoya (285.6 km) in about 40 minutes. The project has been delayed until 2015 due to the unresolved conflict with Shizuoka Prefecture, which is concerned about the negative environmental impact of the line. (The project has been delayed until 2015 due to unresolved conflicts with Shizuoka Prefecture, which is concerned about the negative environmental impact of the line.)

◆"Vibration Concerns" and Concerns about the Ground Surface Caving in

The construction of the first Metropolitan Area tunnel for the Linear Central Shinkansen, which will be excavated to a depth of more than 40 meters, will begin by the end of March at three new sites in Kawasaki City and Machida City, Tokyo, using shield machines (excavators). Although the tunnel is called "investigation," the excavators will finally pass under the feet of the residents along the tunnel, and they are concerned about vibrations during the construction.

From November last year to January this year, JR Tokai held a total of eight explanatory meetings for residents near three emergency exits, including Higashi Yurigaoka (Asao-ku, Kawasaki City). The plan was to dig a tunnel where linear trains would actually pass through while collecting data on vibration and other issues during the survey excavation, and to take countermeasures if any problems were found before moving on to full-scale excavation.

The briefing was closed to the press. At a briefing held near the Higashi Yurigaoka emergency exit in late January, participants expressed concern about vibration, sinking and rising of the ground surface, and impact on groundwater, in contrast to JR Tokai's assertion that "adverse effects from the construction are unlikely. There are still many people who do not know that the Linear Line will pass nearby. The company's stance was also questioned.

The digging began in response to the sinking of the Tokyo Outer Ring Road (Gaikan Expressway), but two of the preceding sites, including one in Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, have been halted due to equipment malfunctions and other problems. A man in his 80s from Asao Ward, Kawasaki City, who attended the briefing said, "I am worried because the tunnel is underground and cannot be seen by anyone. There is no such thing as safe and secure construction. I want to ask again whether it is necessary to take the risk of building a linear Shinkansen line. (Jo Watabe, Mitsuharu Umeno)

The cause was a mistake in adding an additive to the excavator.

JR Tokai announced on March 3 that it would resume excavation this month after repairing a shielding machine that broke down during excavation of the linear central Shinkansen line at a depth of more than 40 metres below ground near the Kitashinagawa emergency exit (Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo).

The excavator was scheduled to dig 300 metres by March 2010, but due to a lack of additives to mix with the soil, soil got onto the front of the excavator and the machine broke down after 50 metres. According to the company, after resuming digging, it will stop after 7 metres, check the condition of the excavator and start digging again by the end of June.

The excavator at the Onoji Emergency Exit (Machida City), which was scheduled to start excavation this month, will need to be replaced and the start of excavation will be delayed until April or later. The company will start excavation at the Kajigaya emergency exit (Miyamae-ku, Kawasaki City) and the Higashi Yurigaoka emergency exit (Asao-ku, Kawasaki City) this month as scheduled.

Linear tunneling resumes in Tokyo and Shinagawa construction zone, JR Tokai

On 10 January, JR Tokai resumed the excavation of an underground tunnel for the Linear Central Shinkansen near Shinagawa Station using a shield machine, which had been suspended since last spring. The company plans to excavate a total of about 300 metres by the end of 2023.

The linear line will pass through the "deep underground" area, which is more than 40 metres underground in urban areas. According to the company, it began excavation in October 2003 in the construction area near Shinagawa Station, the first station on the line, to investigate surface vibrations and the effects on the ground and structures. However, due to equipment failures and other problems, the work was halted in March last year after digging had reached about 55 metres.

JR Tokai plans to decide on future plans after completing the survey and informing local residents. In the past two years, there has been an accident involving deep underground construction, when a road in a residential area collapsed during the construction of the Tokyo Outer Ring Road in Chofu City, Tokyo.

JR Tokai President: "Repairs will not affect the construction schedule".

At a regular press conference held in Tokyo on March 30, JR Tokai President Shunsuke Niwa said that repairs to the excavator were progressing and that "the overall construction schedule will not be affected. The damage to the excavator was caused by damage to the outside of the excavator.
The damage, a 7 centimeter deep dent in the steel cylinder on the outside of the excavator, was confirmed in September. As of September 30, work to remove soil and sand from the dent had been completed, and work to repair the dent from the inside will now begin.

Regarding the opening date of the Shinagawa-Nagoya line, President Niwa said, "Since the start of construction of the Shizuoka section of the Minami-Alps Tunnel is not yet clear, it will be difficult to open the line in 2027. We cannot give a new opening date at this time.

Tokyo Shinagawa Construction progress

For the Linear Central Shinkansen between Shinagawa in Tokyo and Nagoya, tunnels are being dug more than 40 metres below the surface in Tokyo, Kanagawa and Aichi. The Kawasaki site, where excavation for the survey has been completed, was opened to the press. The following is a summary of the progress of the excavation and the outlook for the opening of the project.

The Linear Central Shinkansen line is considered a next-generation transport artery, travelling at 500 km/h and connecting Shinagawa, Tokyo and Nagoya in just 40 minutes. A station tentatively named 'Kanagawa Station' will be built near JR and Keio's Hashimoto Station in Sagamihara City.

As part of the construction of the Linear Central Shinkansen between Shinagawa in Tokyo and Nagoya, tunnels will be dug more than 40 metres below the surface in Tokyo, Kanagawa and Aichi, known as 'deep underground', and JR Tokai has been excavating mainly for research purposes since March 2023.
Kawasaki City, East Yurigaoka construction site open to the public

The Higashi Yurigaoka construction site in Kawasaki City, where the exploratory excavation has been completed, will begin full-scale excavation in September this year, provided that the surrounding area is not affected.

The site was opened to the public at a depth of approximately 80 metres below the surface, and concrete pieces were assembled into the walls of the 133 metre long space excavated during the survey, forming the walls of the tunnel.
Shield machine 10 metres/day in full excavation.

A 14 metre diameter "shield machine" has been installed at the top of the space and, according to JR Tokai, is expected to dig an average of 10 metres per day when full-scale excavation begins.

.

[...]

A construction elevator slowly descends through a large hole in the ground. The distance is about 100 meters, and the difference in height is equivalent to that of a 25- to 30-story building. It is so deep that it is almost dizzying.

When we arrived at the bottom, we found a huge tunnel with a diameter of about 14 meters. A yellow shield machine stood stolidly 133 meters in front of the tunnel. This is the front line of tunnel excavation in the Higashi Yurigaoka section of the Linear Central Shinkansen (Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture).

[...].

While the Linear Central Shinkansen has been the subject of much discussion in the Shizuoka construction zone, where construction has yet to begin, other construction zones between Shinagawa and Nagoya are also progressing at a brisk pace. In Yamanashi Prefecture, the 710-meter-long Minamikoma Tunnel No. 1 will be the first main tunnel to break through in October 2023, except for the linear test line. And in the Tokyo metropolitan area, the Higashi Yurigaoka construction section of the First Metropolitan Area Tunnel, which connects Shinagawa Station and Kanagawa Station (tentative name, to be located in Sagamihara City), has completed survey excavation.

The total length of the First Metropolitan Area Tunnel is approximately 37 km, divided into four sections, of which the Higashi Yurigaoka section, which is approximately 4.2 km long, is the middle section, and will be entirely excavated using the shield tunneling method at a depth of 40 m or more underground.

[...].

Shield tunnelling is often used for deep tunnels in urban areas where the ground is relatively soft. Shield machine components are unloaded from a large hole in the tunnel floor, assembled underground and excavation begins.

A cutter head attached to a tubular steel machine rotates to remove soil and sand from the front of the machine, and a conveyor belt carries the soil and sand to the rear. To prevent the excavated area from collapsing, a wall of panels called segments is built parallel to the excavation. When the work is finished, the shield machine is dismantled and removed from the ground. They are sometimes reused in other construction areas. In the Higashi Yurigaoka construction area, the vertical hole for work will be used as an emergency exit after completion.

Construction of the vertical hole began in February 2017. After that, parts of the shield machine were lowered and assembled underground, and the shield machine was used for exploratory excavation from March to September 2023. Ground surface displacement, vibration/noise and groundwater levels were repeatedly measured during the slow excavation, and the impact on the surrounding environment was confirmed over a six-month period.

[...]. One of the causes was a design error in which the shield machine took up too much soil during the digging process. The same mistake must not be made in the construction of the linear line.

During the survey excavation, special attention was paid to controlling the soil pressure and the amount of soil to be excavated, as well as checking the properties of the soil. Noise and vibration meters were placed on the surface to check for any impact on the ground surface, and the surrounding wells were also checked to see if there were any changes in the water level. The survey excavation was completed as planned," said Hiroyuki Onoguchi, director of JR Tokai's Kanagawa East Construction Office for the Chuo Shinkansen Line.

[...].

The shield machine is currently parked at the 133-meter mark, but will resume work around September after the completion of preparatory work such as the installation of segment loading facilities and conveyor belts to transport excavated soil and sand. During full-scale construction, "we will work to alleviate residents' concerns by setting up an open house where they can directly discuss construction-related issues and a 24-hour reception desk," said Director Onoguchi. Construction is scheduled to be completed by December 2026.

About 20 people are working on this construction section. The cutter head will be operated at the operation center on the ground to remove the soil.

In actual operation, the plan is to dig 10 meters per day toward Nagoya. Taking into account holidays and free days, the company plans to dig about 200 meters per month, which is 2.4 km in one year and 4.8 km in two years, making the completion of construction in December 2026 a generous plan.
