共産党三重県委員会 リニア中央新幹線「中止すべき」見解発表
Mie Prefectural Committee of the Communist Party of Japan Announces Opinion that Linear Central Shinkansen Line "Should be Canceled"

The Mie Prefectural Committee of the Communist Party of Japan (CPP) has announced its opinion that the Linear Central Shinkansen Line, which aims to extend to Osaka, should be cancelled because it has too many problems in terms of necessity and profitability.

The Mie Prefectural Committee of the Communist Party of Japan held a press conference at the prefectural government office on April 12 to announce its views on the Linear Central Shinkansen Line.

According to the statement, the construction work should be stopped because "there are too many problems in terms of necessity, profitability, safety, environmental impact, etc., and we cannot support it.

As specific reasons for their opposition, they stated that even if the intermediate station scheduled to be built in Kameyama City is installed, it will not lead to convenient transportation within the prefecture, and conversely, the financial burden on local municipalities will become a burden on the economy, and the power consumption of the Linear Shinkansen is estimated to be three to four times that of the Tokaido Shinkansen, which is counter to energy conservation.

Takashi Otake, chairman of the Mie Prefectural Committee of the Communist Party of Japan, commented, "At first glance, with the governor at the helm, the construction of the line is proceeding apace as if it were a matter of course, without any discussion of the various issues involved. We need to stop and have a wide-ranging discussion about what problems are anticipated.

無謀リニア中止すべき 共産三重県委、県予算編成に要望
"Reckless Linear Linear Project Must Be Canceled": Mie Prefectural Committee of the Communist Party Requests Prefectural Budget Compilation

On December 14, the Mie Prefectural Committee of the Communist Party submitted a written request to the prefectural government for the compilation of the initial budget for the next fiscal year. The committee urged the prefectural government to cancel spending on the Linear Central Shinkansen Line, which is scheduled to have a station in the prefecture, and to enhance support for regional public transportation.

The letter stated that the Linear Line is a "reckless plan. It should be cancelled after examining the issues involved. The number of people who need to go to the hospital or go shopping is increasing. The petition called for support for community buses and the construction of bicycle paths.

In response to the new coronavirus, the committee requested that the government continue to "catch all cases" of the virus and strengthen testing in preparation for a simultaneous outbreak with seasonal influenza. Support was also requested for caregivers and childcare workers, who are at risk of infection while performing their duties.

On the same day, committee chairman Takashi Otake, prefectural assembly member Rika Yamamoto (Communist Party, two terms, elected in Yokkaichi City), and others visited the prefectural office and handed the petition to Governor Katsuyuki Ikimi. Committee Chairman Ohtake stated, "I hope that a forum will be set up to discuss the Linear Linear project, regardless of whether you are for or against it.

Regarding the Linear Central Shinkansen, the worst waste of taxpayers' money, in November the prefectural government proposed to the Central Japan Railway Company (JR Tokai) the establishment of a new station in Kameyama City, and is calling for the early opening of a new station between Nagoya and Osaka.

The JCP is the only party that has specifically denounced the problems with the Linear Line and called for its cancellation. The Line's power consumption is four times that of the Tokaido Shinkansen, wasting enormous amounts of energy, and it is dangerous from the standpoint of disaster prevention because it runs near the epicenter of the Nankai Trough earthquake. Even if a new station is built in Kameyama City, there will be no connection to conventional lines at all of the three candidate sites, and there will be absolutely no advantage in terms of convenience.

Takeo Matsuoka, former professor at Kogakukan University, said, "If the linear project is forced through, it will be a major negative legacy for the future. With the environmental assessment of the Nagoya-Osaka line about to begin, the Communist Party is the only party that can pursue the issue in the prefectural assembly.
