New JR Tokai President Visits Shizuoka Gov. to discuss Maglev

Shizuoka Prefecture announced on April 10 that JR Tokai President Shunsuke Niwa will visit Governor Heita Kawakatsu on April 12 to greet the new president, who will take office on April 1, and Chairman Shin Kaneko will be in attendance. It is expected that they will exchange views on the Shizuoka construction zone of the Linear Central Shinkansen Line, the construction of which has been difficult for the prefectural government and JR Tokai to start.

The Shizuoka section of the line has been the subject of protracted discussions between the prefectural government, which is concerned about the impact of the tunnel construction on the river's water volume and ecosystem, and JR Tokai, which is aiming for an early start of the line.

At a press conference held on April 6, President Niwa stated, "We want to start construction as soon as possible. We will do our best. He also revealed his intention to visit Governor Kawakatsu, and said that he would "carefully communicate" with the surrounding municipalities to promote construction.
