China’s ‘Electromagnetic Sled’ Is Almost Supersonic

China has achieved another first in high-speed rail technology. After operating the world’s fastest commercial maglev train since 2003, China is now testing a much faster system that is reportedly approaching more than 80% of the speed of sound.

Known as an “electromagnetic sled,” the train has a top speed of 1,030 kilometers (640 miles) per hour. That’s 2.4 times faster than the Shanghai Transrapid Maglev Train, which tops out at 431 kilometers per hour on a 30-kilometer elevated track to and from Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

the electromagnetic sled is being designed and built by the chinese academy of sciences institute of electrical engineering in cooperation with the city of jinan and the provincial governments of shangdong province. The work is being done on a ground test facility for ultra-high-speed, high-mass electromagnetic propulsion technology in the city of Jinan.

A Chinese Global Television Network (CGTV) shows a single car speeding along a straight track built on flat land. Top speed can be reached with a total weight of one metric ton (1,000 kilograms) or more, according to reports.

In addition to high-speed ground transportation, testing of the system will likely contribute to China’s broader research on aerodynamics, materials science, aerospace, and perhaps even railguns

Well for a start the Japanese SC maglev has proven 600 km/h for ten years but it is parked while they extend the tunnel and 1,030 km/h is just BS.
