Cutting-edge technologies central to Chinese modernization

By Alexander Ayertey Odonkor | chinadaily.com.cn
In the latter part of April 2023, a scientific research team in China successfully completed the country's first full-size superconducting test run for an ultra-high-speed magnetic levitation (maglev) train. Combining maglev technology with low vacuum technology, the train, which will become the fastest means of on-ground transport once completed, will be capable of running up to 1,000 kilometers per hour. Home to by far the world's largest high-speed railroads network – with 155,000 km of railways in operation, including 42,000 km of high-speed lines as of the end of 2022, the addition of ultra-high speed magnetic trains to China's rail network, will further truncate travel time for people and cargo – improve economic efficiency and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions – promoting the harmonious coexistence of people and nature, the bedrock of Chinese modernization.

In the country's pursuit of modernization, thus, Chinese modernization, a unique development pathway for more than 1.4 billion people – prioritizing common prosperity for all and promoting peaceful coexistence of mankind and the natural environment, China has increasingly leveraged cutting-edge technologies, including high-speed railroads and the internet of things to drive development – these tools were central to concerted efforts dedicated to achieve the first centenary goal – they ensured that the country's development improved the lives of its people.

China's ultra-high-speed maglev train, the T-flight, recently passed a successful trial run in Shanxi province, marking a key advance in transportation technology. Capable of reaching speeds up to 1,000 kilometers per hour, the T-flight is three times faster than current high-speed trains and even outpaces airplanes. It could reduce travel time between Beijing and Shanghai to just one hour, a significant cut from the current 4 hours and 18 minutes by train, or roughly two hours by air.

The T-flight's innovative design relies on a low vacuum tube combined with magnetic levitation (maglev) technology, allowing the train to operate in a "near-ground flight" mode. By minimizing air resistance through a vacuum environment and preventing contact between the train and tracks, the system reduces both friction and noise, leading to higher speeds and a quieter, smoother ride compared to conventional rail systems.

Developed by the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), the T-flight project aims to create a "one-hour economic circle" linking key urban centers in China, supporting faster regional travel and economic growth. According to Zhao Ming, a CASIC technician, the system will integrate with current high-speed rail and air travel, forming a comprehensive transportation network across the country.

During the recent test in Yanggao county, the T-flight met all critical technical benchmarks, including speed and levitation height. Launched in 2021, the project has made significant progress, and this successful trial marks a major step toward bringing the train to market, potentially reshaping China’s transportation future.

It looks like they are using the Japanese EDS instead of the Chinese EMS

China has introduced a cutting-edge magnetic levitation (maglev) train prototype capable of reaching speeds up to 600 km/h (373 mph), setting a new global benchmark in high-speed rail technology. Developed by CRRC Qingdao Sifang, the train uses high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets to levitate above the tracks, virtually eliminating friction and enabling ultra-fast, smooth travel.

The prototype is designed for flexibility, with configurations ranging from two to ten carriages, each accommodating over 100 passengers. Advanced features include intelligent braking systems, vibration reduction, 5G connectivity, wireless charging, and aerodynamic designs aimed at maximizing speed and energy efficiency.

While the technology promises travel times comparable to airplanes—such as a 2.5-hour journey between Beijing and Shanghai—the high infrastructure costs mean deployment will likely be limited to select megacity corridors. Still, this development positions China at the forefront of next-generation rail, rivaling Japan’s maglev efforts and far outpacing Western nations in the field.

The country is also exploring ultra-high-speed vacuum maglev systems, potentially capable of reaching 1,000 km/h, hinting at a transformative future for long-distance ground travel.
