New Iida Viewing Deck Shows Maglev Progress—And Local Anxiety About Whether the Line Will Open in Time

JR Tokai has opened a new observation deck in Iida, Nagano Prefecture, giving local residents a wide view of the construction area for the planned Nagano Prefecture maglev station and nearby works. The deck overlooks a long stretch of the project, including the station area, bridge piers, and tunnel-related construction, and is meant to make the scale and progress of the project easier to understand. The station construction in Kamigo-Iinuma and Zakōji began in 2022. JR Tokai created the observation point so people can directly see how the work is progressing.

The visit highlighted a mixed local mood. Residents could now physically see that work is advancing, but the long delays have also sharpened doubts about timing. The tone captured in the coverage is that some people are asking whether the line will open soon enough for them to ever ride it themselves.

The observation deck is called “Iida Linear Observation Deck” and is located on high ground in the Kami-Iida/Iinuma area. It will open to the general public starting May 20, with limited free viewing dates initially planned in May and June.
