The Linear Metro is a new subway system that connects underground lines in six cities in Japan, including the underground Oedo Line in Tokyo and the underground Imazatosuji Line in Osaka.
The Linear Metro is a different type of linear motor car from the levitating type used in the Linear Chuo Shinkansen, which is currently in trial operation, and is called the wheel type. The wheel type uses a linear motor for propulsion, while the rails and wheels support and guide the vehicle. Due to its structure, the diameter of the wheels can be reduced and the height of the car can be lowered, making it possible to reduce the tunnel cross-section.
Taking advantage of this, the Linear Metro can reduce the cost of subway construction, which is estimated at about 25 to 40 billion yen per kilometer, and has been adopted by municipalities in six cities in Japan. The first practical application was the Tsurumiryokuchi Line, an access line connecting the city center to the site of the International Garden and Greenery Exposition held in Osaka in 1990. The man who introduced the advanced urban transportation system to the world was Tsurukichi Imaoka, who was born in the Meiji era and came from the Ministry of Railways.
During his time at the Ministry of Railways and Japan National Railways (JNR), Imaoka led many successful projects and rose to become an executive of JNR. In his later years, he became Director General of the Osaka City Transportation Bureau and promoted the construction of a subway network, reforming the transportation situation in Osaka. He also conceived the idea of a next-generation subway called the Linear Metro and successfully commercialized it.
