On September 19, 1972 (Showa 47), the first public test of the "ML100," a vehicle powered by a linear motor, was conducted at the Railway Technical Research Institute in Kokubunji, Tokyo, successfully achieving levitation and movement. The experiment began with a ribbon-cutting by JNR President Isozaki. The two-tone vehicle, straddling the guideway, levitated about 5 centimeters (≈2 inches) and traveled roughly 200 meters (≈656 feet) at a speed of 60 km/h (≈37 mph).
