The planned high-speed train connecting Washington, DC, and Baltimore in just 15 minutes is progressing, with environmental and engineering studies still underway. Estimated at $20 billion, the 33-mile superconducting maglev (SCMAGLEV) system is being developed by Northeast Maglev LLC, with the long-term goal of linking DC to New York City in an hour. The Northeast Corridor, home to 17% of the U.S. population and 20% of jobs, faces increasing congestion, and demand for travel in the region is projected to rise by 115% by 2040.
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT-MTA) defined a study area of approximately 40 miles long and 10 miles wide, running roughly between I-95 and the former Washington Baltimore & Annapolis Electric Railroad alignment. The route will pass through Washington, DC, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Howard County, Anne Arundel County, and Prince George’s County.
According to Bill Scott, President of Northeast Maglev LLC, 70% of the train’s route—around 24 miles—will run through underground tunnels, each measuring 50 feet in width to accommodate two maglev trains at once. The project is expected to take eight years from the start of construction. A new Baltimore maglev station will be built at either Cherry Hill or Camden Yards, with the FRA making the final decision. Additionally, Baltimore-Washington Rapid Rail (BWRR) plans to build solar or wind farms in Western Maryland to power the maglev system.
A one-way ticket will cost $33, making it an affordable and competitive option for commuters and travelers. With an estimated 12 million riders expected in the first year, this project aims to revolutionize transportation in the Northeast Corridor, easing congestion and cutting travel times significantly.

Anything under 1,000 kilometres is not worth double handling containers but if it was in a straight tunnel over 1,000 km it could earn enough to subsidise daytime fares.
