Central Japan Railway Company Selects AWS for Yamanashi Maglev Line to Drive Efficient Operations for its Next-Generation, High-Speed Train Service

Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) is leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies to enhance the operations of its Yamanashi Maglev Line, the world’s fastest train. Using AWS's IoT, machine learning (ML), and generative AI capabilities, JR Central is improving track maintenance, reducing costs, and enhancing the passenger experience. The new Super Conducting Maglev (SC Maglev) system, which propels trains using magnetic forces, is in trial operations and can reach speeds up to 500 km/h, cutting travel time between Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka in half.

By employing AWS's ML and IoT, JR Central is using data from power lines and electronic track inspection vehicles to predict equipment failures and optimize maintenance. The company built an ML model using Amazon SageMaker to detect anomalies in power transmission and uses Amazon QuickSight for data visualization, allowing preemptive maintenance actions. In the future, JR Central plans to implement generative AI applications using Amazon Bedrock to provide maintenance recommendations.

JR Central aims to revolutionize high-speed travel and set new standards for efficiency and safety through data-driven operations, while AWS continues to support its cloud transformation.

Japan just needs China expertise to drive the tunnel.

My five cents is nuclear for the extra power needed for data centres then connect Sydney to Melbourne with the overnight Japanese SC maglev and as the tunnel goes directly below Snowy 2 put HVDC cables in it to save $4b on the Hume overhead transmission.

If the tunnel is 14m diameter the SC maglev can earn AU $1.4b p/a with an overnight container train making daytime fares only AU $10 to anywhere between Sydney and Melbourne for stage one.

Using fly in fly out Chinese expert teams with 60 TBM from 30 launch sites it would be driven in two years so the SC maglev can be installed.

Stage two would be the same from Brisbane to Sydney and as economics is the main obstacle connecting a few big cities in a line it would be an ideal opportunity to showcase the SC maglev in Australia.

I know they want to put a HSR Newcastle to Sydney first but it would be easier to get bipartisan support connecting Sydney to Melbourne via Canberra and Albury first so a return of $1.4b p/a can be achieved on the $100 b project in three years.

To allow trains to come from all directions in the future I have designed them all to terminate at Parrahub with only a freight siding at WSA for overnight container trains from Melbourne and Brisbane.

Also it may be a good idea to have Australians to co design the SC maglev container trains so as soon as the Chinese have driven the 14m diameter tunnel from Sydney to Melbourne via passing stations at Canberra and Albury we know how to do it.
