[JP] JR Tokai plans to export maglev technology

Unread post by Miss Maglev »

JR Tokai President Shunsuke Niwa expressed strong interest in expanding the company's maglev technology beyond the US amid challenges with a Northeast Corridor project. He plans steady progress on domestic Linear Central Shinkansen construction in 2026 while introducing new passenger amenities on the Tokaido Shinkansen. Niwa stated intentions to promote maglev tech to countries other than the US, where subsidy withdrawal in August 2025 has stalled Northeast plans. He views the technology as viable, committing to persistent promotion despite delays. Domestic construction will advance steadily in 2026.

JR Tokai's President Niwa Expresses Interest in Expanding Maglev Technology Overseas, Eyes Markets Beyond the US

In an interview with the Nihon Keizai Shimbun and other media outlets, Shunsuke Niwa, the president of JR Tokai, expressed his desire to expand the technology behind the Maglev Chuo Shinkansen overseas. He stated, "I would like to promote this technology beyond just the United States." While the company had been supporting promotional activities for applying Maglev technology to transportation networks in the northeastern US, its feasibility has weakened since the withdrawal of subsidies in August 2025.

Niwa acknowledged that the plan in the US has not been progressing smoothly, saying, "The project is not on track as expected." However, he emphasized, "The technology itself has not been rejected. It may take time, but we will continue to promote it in various ways." He also confirmed that domestic Maglev construction would proceed steadily in 2026.

If China uses its TBM experience to just drive a single 14 metre diameter from Sydney to Melbourne without buying land and without protests Japan can then install its proven SC maglev allowing a single guideway between cities with overnight containers earning sufficient to keep the daytime fare below planes.

Sure beats having a punch up in the south China sea.
