Documents from China suggest that the already largely completed Maglev station at Hongqiao Airport (Shanghai) will be partially mused in an extension of a wheel-rail intercity line. Significant reconstruction work seems to be planned here. However, parts of the existing Maglev station are still to be retained. Overall, the development seems surprising, since new plans for Maglev projects originally seemed to aim for greater use of the Hongqiao Maglev. However, a PowerPoint presentation on expansion plans for the existing Shanghai Maglev by the vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), He Huawu, in September 2020 already suggested that Hongqiao Airport would not yet receive a Maglev connection. Instead, a 164 km Transrapid route for the new CRRC600 Transrapid to Hangzhou is to be built without a stopover in Hongqiao.

An eagle-eyed reporter from the Paper took photos of the slides accompanying He’s speech, which further detail routes and stations. Although the original article has since been taken offline, according to the photos, the Shanghai-Hangzhou maglev will be about 164 kilometers in length, with proposed stops at Hangzhou city, Jiaxing, Shanghai South, World Expo and Longyang Road.
