JR Central (JR Tokai) plans to introduce a new experimental vehicle for the Linear Chuo Shinkansen by the summer of 2025. This new vehicle will be placed between the two end cars of the existing "L0" model or its improved version, operating on the linear test track in Yamanashi Prefecture. President Shunsuke Niwa explained in an interview that the goal is to reduce environmental impact with this new design.
JR Tokai has been conducting tests to improve technology and safety on the linear test line. The most recent addition was an upgraded "L0" model in the summer of 2020. This new experimental vehicle will mark the company's first new car in about five years.
Niwa also addressed the ongoing construction delays in the Shizuoka Prefecture section of the project, stating that while they wish to begin work as soon as possible, discussions with Shizuoka authorities are still ongoing and need to be accelerated.
The Linear Shinkansen is seen as a crucial infrastructure project, offering not only a faster alternative to the Tōkaidō Shinkansen but also increased resilience to disasters and the ability to address the aging infrastructure of the current network. Niwa emphasized that it would play an essential role in revitalizing the economy.
JR Tokai also plans to enhance its services to attract more Shinkansen passengers. In collaboration with pet companies, a new service will allow passengers to take their dogs out of their cages during the journey, addressing the growing demand for pet-friendly travel. Niwa expressed hopes to create new demand for Shinkansen travel with these initiatives.

What they should do while they are waiting for the tunnel to be finished is to design an overnight container train for big countries that can subsidise daytime fares below planes.
