South Korea has launched a research project to develop magnetic levitation technology for a next-generation high-speed train system called the Hypertube.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is partnering with the Korea Railroad Research Institute on the project. The Hypertube would use magnetic forces to levitate and propel a train through a low-pressure tube, dramatically cutting travel time.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the train could cover the 320-kilometer Seoul–Busan route in just 16 minutes and 15 seconds—around one-seventh the time it currently takes on the KTX high-speed train.
Research will focus on core technologies such as electromagnetic propulsion, precision control, and the high-speed transport vehicle.
The project runs through 2027 with a budget of 12.7 billion won (approx. $8.54 million), including 3.68 billion won allocated for 2025.
