Maglev Meets the Classroom: Achi High Seniors Talk Local Future
On January 7, Achi High School in Achi Village, Nagano Prefecture held a special class on the Chuo Shinkansen (maglev) for 62 graduating seniors, inviting staff from JR Tokai and the Chuo Shinkansen Nagano Construction Office. The school arranged the session after learning the route passes through Achi Village, aiming to help students understand the project’s local implications before graduation; it was described as the first such class at a Nagano high school.
The program had two parts: an overview of the maglev and construction progress— including NATM tunneling—using video and slides, followed by small-group discussions on whether students want to stay in the area and how the maglev might change their options. Groups summarized how the project could be used for the region’s future across jobs, tourism, and daily life. Students cited visible impacts such as increased dump-truck traffic and noticing maglev-related structures, and one student planning to work at a Hirugami Onsen inn linked the maglev to higher tourism and easier travel. The principal and JR Tokai both indicated interest in continuing similar learning and community communication going forward.
