Residents file lawsuit against JR Tokai

Post by Miss Maglev »

A group of residents in the Tokyo metropolitan area have filed a lawsuit against JR Tokai to stop the construction of a tunnel for the Linear Central Shinkansen, which is scheduled to be built underneath the city center, claiming that their right to live in safety is being violated.

JR Tokai is planning to construct tunnels at a depth of more than 40 meters below the surface in some sections of the line.

Twenty-four residents of Ota and Setagaya wards, who live in the vicinity of the planned tunnel, have filed a lawsuit against JR Tokai, demanding an injunction against the construction. According to the lawsuit, the residents claim that their right to live in safety is being violated because of the possibility of similar damage occurring in Chofu City, Tokyo, where a road caved in last October due to the same deep underground construction.
In addition, the tunnel construction plan has caused damage to the surrounding land prices.

Another lawsuit is currently pending in the Tokyo District Court to revoke the government's approval for the construction of the Central Linear Railway.

JR Tokai commented on the lawsuit, saying, "We have not had a chance to see the complaint, so we cannot say anything about it, but we will take appropriate action.

According to the complaint, 24 residents of Denenchofu, Ota-ku, and Higashi-Tamagawa, Setagaya-ku, claim that the construction is expected to cause cave-ins and ground subsidence, and that in addition to the danger to their lives, they are concerned about the decline in land prices and damage to their property. They also criticize the project, saying that it has no public nature, as it will waste a large amount of electricity and cause environmental destruction.

At a press conference in Tokyo after the lawsuit was filed, Kazuhiko Miki, 63, the head of the plaintiffs' group, said, "We have to stop this before something irreversible happens.
