Russia’s “Domestic Maglev” Push: Rosatom-Backed Project Targets 450+ km/h, Test Tracks Planned
A Cheboksary-based manufacturer, Sespel, is working with Rosatom on a homegrown high-speed maglev technology, with work on the train body already underway, according to remarks by Sespel CEO Vladimir Bakshaev at a technical council meeting in Kazan.
The project pitches maglev’s standard advantages—low noise and vibration, no wheel–rail friction, and a design framed as derailment-resistant. The article claims the train could exceed 450 km/h, compared with the “White Gyrfalcon” locomotive for Russia’s planned high-speed rail line, cited at up to 400 km/h.
It also outlines three main levitation approaches—EDS (superconducting/electrodynamic suspension), EMS (electromagnetic suspension), and permanent-magnet systems, with permanent magnets described as the most cost-efficient.
Russia’s broader maglev effort is presented as multi-year and organized: a “Russian Maglev” cluster formed in 2023 bringing together research groups, Rosatom-linked structures, and machine-building firms; the cluster developed V-shaped electromagnets as a key component. In 2024, the Transport Ministry backed the idea of building test ranges in St. Petersburg and Yakutia to validate and advance maglev technologies.
