Win a Free Ride on the Maglev! Campaign to Celebrate 5 Million Kilometers on the Yamanashi Maglev Test Track

JR Central is holding a campaign offering a chance to win a "free test ride" on the maglev train as the Yamanashi Maglev Test Track is expected to reach 5 million kilometers of travel distance this fall.

The test track runs 42.8 kilometers from Uenohara City to Fuefuki City, and it will become part of the route for the Chuo Shinkansen after its official launch. The track has been operational since 1997 and was extended to its current length in 2013. As of August 23, the total travel distance had reached 4.92 million kilometers, with the milestone of 5 million kilometers projected for mid-October.

For the campaign, 100 pairs of participants (2 seats per pair) will be selected from those who follow the company’s official account on X (formerly Twitter) and repost (retweet) the relevant post. Winners will be able to participate in a free test ride on October 23. All applicants, including those who are not selected, will receive a smartphone wallpaper as a gift.

In addition, JR Central is accepting applications for the regular ride experience on October 24 and 25. A total of 240 pairs (480 seats) will be available, with the price set at ¥4,400 per pair (2 seats).

Applications for both the free and paid rides can be submitted via the company’s website until September 19.

JR Tokai to Hold Linear Ride for the Public on 23rd - Experimental Line in Yamanashi

JR Tokai held a test-ride event for the press on October 17 at the Linear Central Shinkansen experimental line in Yamanashi Prefecture, commemorating the total distance of 5 million kilometers the line will travel by the end of October, and will also hold a trial ride for the public on October 23. Although the construction of the Shinagawa-Nagoya line between Shinagawa and Nagoya was abandoned due to the delay in the start of construction in the Shizuoka construction zone, the superconductivity technology is now being used to promote the line.

At the test-ride event, the mechanism of superconductive running was explained, and the train actually reached a speed of 500 km/h and switched from running on wheels to running on levitation. On the test track, the train runs an average of 2,000 km per day on a 40-km section to test its durability.

Discussions involving the prefectural government, the national government, JR Tokai, and local governments along the Oigawa River are continuing for the Shizuoka section of the line, which has not yet begun construction.
