On August 5, Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) granted the media first access to construction sites of river bridges for the Linear Chuo Shinkansen. This included the Kamanashigawa Bridge in Yamanashi Prefecture, which will be the longest river bridge on the route between Shinagawa and Nagoya. The substructure, including the bridge piers, is nearly complete, and construction of the superstructure is currently underway. In addition to the press, 16 residents of Yamanashi Prefecture selected through a regional infrastructure site visit program organized by the prefectural government were invited to visit the bridge and receive an explanation of the ongoing construction.

Two bridges were opened to the public: the Kamanashigawa Bridge, which spans 754 meters across the Kamanashi River, and the Jonengawa Bridge, located immediately to the east and measuring 225 meters in length. These structures are located approximately 5 kilometers west of the planned Yamanashi Prefecture Linear Station (provisional name, Kofu City). The bridges are being constructed using the cantilever erection method, in which the bridge girder is extended to both sides from the top of the piers. This results in concrete structures that resemble large balancing scales.

At the upper section of the Jonengawa Bridge, which stands approximately 20 meters high, the location for the guideway—on which the Linear Chuo Shinkansen vehicles will run—was indicated. One participant in the site visit, 15-year-old Nao Shibuya, who joined with her family, remarked, “I’m excited to think that the Linear will run here and we’ll be able to get to Tokyo quickly.”

Construction of the Kamanashigawa Bridge began in April 2021, with completion of the structural components targeted for August 2026. However, as work on the river can only proceed during the lower water periods from November to May, there remains a possibility that the construction schedule may be extended.

The bridge in question measures approximately 19 meters in height and 225 meters in length. Construction began in September 2021. This marks the first public unveiling of the upper portion of a river-spanning bridge on the entire Shinagawa–Nagoya section of the maglev line. Families with children on summer vacation also participated in the site visit.

Masato Okazaki, Director of the JR Central Yamanashi East Construction Office, stated:
“We aim to complete these two bridges and the adjacent viaduct, and then proceed to install the environmental protection infrastructure such as the guideway, noise barriers, and soundproof covers.”
(Translated from Japanese)

According to JR Central, approximately 50% of the upper structure in the surrounding construction area—where the trains will operate—has been completed. The target for full completion remains August 2026.

Giant Structure Emerges Along Maglev Route in Yamanashi — Longest Bridge on Chuo Shinkansen Under Construction

Construction of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen is accelerating in Yamanashi Prefecture. While most of the 83.4 km (51.8-mile) route in the prefecture will run through tunnels, a major above-ground highlight is the Kamanashi River Bridge and the adjacent Jyonai River Bridge. Once joined, the 1,238 m (0.77-mile) span will be the longest bridge on the line.

The bridges, located about 5 km (3.1 miles) west of the planned Yamanashi Station, are being built under a joint project commissioned by JR Central and managed by the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency. Work began in October 2020 and is set to finish in August 2026.

Construction is carried out from November to May to avoid high water in the rivers. The substructure is nearly complete, with about half of the girders finished. The track guideway and noise barriers will be installed after the viaduct is complete.

Bridge piers are built using the pneumatic caisson method, sinking massive concrete foundations into the riverbed under high air pressure to keep groundwater out. Once operational, maglev trains bound for Nagoya will climb toward the Southern Alps here, benefiting from a large 8,000 m curve radius designed for high-speed running.
