Bridge Construction Progressing in Yamanashi Prefecture

JR Central recently opened up construction sites in Yamanashi Prefecture to the media, showcasing progress on two major river-spanning bridges for the Linear Chuo Shinkansen: the Kamunashi River Bridge (754m, the longest on the Shinagawa–Nagoya route) and the Jonan River Bridge (225m). These structures are part of a 27.1 km above-ground section of the maglev line, which otherwise runs mostly through deep tunnels.

The Jonan River Bridge’s top platform—about 18m high—offers sweeping views of the Kofu Basin. The elevated viaduct, 16m wide, will carry maglev trains in both directions at speeds of up to 500 km/h. Though the guideway hasn’t been installed yet, rebar placements show where it will go. Residents invited to tour the site expressed excitement about the future line.

Construction of the Kamunashi River Bridge also continues, with massive piers already in place. Despite relatively narrow rivers, the scale and strength of these bridges are impressive, with reinforced structures designed to withstand maglev speeds. The combined construction period for both bridges runs from October 2020 to August 2026—a one-year delay from the original schedule, due in part to delays in Shizuoka.

Currently, foundation work is complete and superstructure construction is about 50% done. Due to river regulations, work can only occur from November to May, and is paused during holidays, adding to time constraints.

Major construction on the Chuo Linear Shinkansen continues across Yamanashi Prefecture. On August 5, 2025, the prefecture held a public site tour of the “Jonanegawa Bridge” project, while JR Tokai opened the neighboring “Kamanashigawa Bridge” site to the press.

Participants included local students, from elementary to university level, and their families. The day began at the Kyoto Water Treatment Center in Fuefuki City with a briefing on the “New Yamanashi Ring Road.” This 43‑km bypass is designed to ease traffic in the Kofu urban area and strengthen links to surrounding municipalities. Construction currently focuses on a 5.5‑km stretch of the eastern section between Ochiai (Kofu) and Hirose (Isawa, Fuefuki).

The tour also featured virtual reality demonstrations of the construction process, helping participants better grasp the project’s scale. Later, buses took the group to the Higashi Aburakawa IC worksite near Kose Sports Park, where earthworks for embankments are under way. Attendees rode heavy machinery, experiencing both the operator’s view and the noise and power of the site firsthand.

In the southern section, bridge construction is advancing across the Byodo River and Nigori River. In the north, abutments are being installed in preparation for the placement of factory-built girders.

From VR simulations to climbing machinery, the event gave participants a rare opportunity to witness the future foundations of Yamanashi’s maglev network and surrounding road system.

The overall plan for the New Yamanashi Ring Road is a roughly 43-kilometer-long loop road encircling the city of Kofu, consisting of four sections: north, east, south, and west.
On the southern side of the loop, the Yamanashi Linear Maglev Station is planned, providing a major new transit hub for the region.
The western section uses the existing Chubu-Odan Expressway, while the other segments are being developed as high-standard, toll-free regional roads.
Once completed, the project is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion in the city and improve access to neighboring municipalities.
