Construction of Gifu Prefecture's Linear Shinkansen Station Delayed by 6.5 Years

On December 23, JR Tokai announced a delay in the completion of the Linear Central Shinkansen station in Gifu Prefecture, pushing the original completion date from March 2025 to December 2031, a delay of 6 years and 9 months. The delay is attributed to issues with land acquisition and changes in the design of the elevated bridge for the station.

The station, planned for Nakatsugawa City in Gifu Prefecture, will be a ground-level structure 30 meters high, 45 meters wide, and 1.3 kilometers long. According to JR Tokai's public relations, delays in land acquisition, as well as the decision to change the design of the concrete noise barriers on the bridge from a semicircular to a square shape, have caused the delay. The modification in design resulted in a heavier bridge, necessitating strengthened foundations for the supporting piers, which further delayed construction.

[JP] +6,5 Years Construction Time: ward leaders voice their shock

Unread post by latestnews »

Construction of Gifu Station for the Linear Central Shinkansen Line underway in Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, extended by 6 years and 9 months.

JR Tokai announced on April 23 that the construction period for the Gifu Station of the Linear Central Shinkansen Line, which is under construction in Nakatsugawa City, will be extended to December 2031, six years and nine months later than originally planned. The construction of the viaduct was delayed by the delay in the construction of the station. The construction of the elevated bridge had to be revised from the original plan because of the complicated structure of Gifu Station, which also accommodates a turnout line to the rail yard. JR Tokai held a meeting on December 20 to explain the extension of the construction period to local ward leaders in the Sakamoto area, and the ward leaders voiced their shock at the extension and asked for a more detailed explanation. According to the construction plan for Gifu Station, the construction period was originally scheduled to last until March 2025.

[JP] Delayed Maglev Project: When Will the Future Arrive?

Delayed Maglev Project: When Will the Future Arrive?

The construction of the Maglev Central Shinkansen, a high-speed rail line intended to connect Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka at speeds of up to 500 km/h, has been ongoing for over 10 years. The project, initially envisioned to revolutionize travel between these major cities, has faced numerous setbacks. Construction has encountered technical challenges, delays in tunneling, and disputes over land acquisition, all contributing to a much longer timeline than originally expected. Although JR Tokai, the company behind the project, initially set a 2027 opening date, that target is no longer realistic, and further delays are expected. In addition to construction hurdles, the project's financial details, including ticket prices, remain unclear, adding to public uncertainty. Despite advancements in vehicle technology and continued investment, the completion of the Maglev system is uncertain, leaving the future of this ambitious high-speed rail project still in question. The hopes for a rapid connection between Japan’s largest cities now seem distant.

[JP] Construction of Gifu Prefecture's Linear Shinkansen Station Delayed until 2031

Unread post by latestnews »

JR Central has announced a 3-year, 9-month extension for the construction of the shuttle line connecting the Chubu General Rolling Stock Depot and the provisional Gifu Station in Nakatsugawa for the Linear Chuo Shinkansen. This means completion is now expected by December 2031.

Importantly, this delay will not affect the planned opening of the Shinagawa–Nagoya main segment, which remains set for 2036 or later. The extension is due to challenging soil conditions at the site, but the overall timeline for maglev service between Shinagawa and Nagoya is unchanged.

Re: [JP] Construction of Gifu Prefecture's Linear Shinkansen Station Delayed by 6.5 Years

JR東海 has announced an extension of the construction period for the Linear Chuo Shinkansen's Central Comprehensive Vehicle Base in Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture. The completion deadline has been extended from March 2028 to December 2031, a delay of 3 years and 9 months. The delay is attributed to encountering more soft soil than expected, requiring increased excavation and changes in construction methods. Additionally, some areas faced delays due to incomplete negotiation and construction restrictions after work started.
Despite this extension, the planned opening between Shinagawa and Nagoya, projected for 2034 or later, is not expected to be impacted. The extension also includes work on the transfer line connecting the base to the provisional Gifu station.
