JR Tokai: Nagoya linear tunnel excavation to start spring 2024
JR Tokai announced on March 5 that it will begin "survey excavation" this spring to investigate the impact of tunnel construction on the surrounding area in a section of the Linear Central Shinkansen construction zone in Nagoya City. By the summer, about 300 metres will have been excavated from the Meijo emergency exit in the city's Naka Ward towards Kasugai City, Aichi Prefecture. After explaining the results to residents, full-scale excavation will begin. After the Tokyo area, tunnel construction will begin in the centre of Nagoya.
On the same day, an environmental protection plan for tunnel excavation was sent to communities along the route. The plan covers a 5.8-kilometre section east of the Meijo emergency exit of the 7.6-kilometre First Chukyo Area Tunnel (Meijo construction section), which connects Nagoya Line Station and the Kachigawa emergency exit in Kasugai City. Shield machines will be used to dig "deep underground" to a depth of 40 metres or more. Construction will last until March 2026.
In January this year, JR Tokai held a total of four information meetings for residents along the route in Nagoya City, attended by around 360 people. Residents asked questions about surface and groundwater impacts, vibrations and other issues, and the company explained its countermeasures.
