Prof. Fujii Calls for Hokuriku Shinkansen Extension Before Maglev to Secure Regional Future
Professor Satoshi Fujii of Kyoto University, an expert in transportation engineering, delivered a speech in Kanazawa advocating for the early full extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Osaka—prioritizing it over the Chuo Shinkansen (Maglev line). At a political and economic forum hosted by the Hokkoku Shimbun, Fujii emphasized that the current need to transfer trains at Tsuruga creates a psychological barrier equivalent to adding 30 minutes to travel time. He argued that with seamless Shinkansen access, Kanazawa would feel as close to Kyoto residents as cities like Okayama or Nagoya, leading to increased business and personal exchange.
Fujii also warned that if the Chuo Shinkansen opens before the Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Osaka, Hokuriku could face significant population decline and economic stagnation, stating, “There is no future for Hokuriku” under such a scenario. He addressed concerns about the financial burden of construction on local governments, noting that unlike roads, Shinkansen lines generate revenue. He asserted that the investment would be recoverable, urging for the Hokuriku Shinkansen’s early full completion as a vital infrastructure move for the region’s future.
